A baker from Milan who gave out bread to neighbors to help them through the first wave of the pandemic has died from the disease.
Gianni Bernardinello’s selfless act made the headlines back in March when he started putting baskets full of bread, pizza and sweets outside his shop in Milan’s Chinatown.
“To give a hand to those in need,” the sign above the baskets read, “help yourself and think of others too.”
“He said he was putting out leftovers at night but I also saw him putting out fresh bread in the middle of the day,” Alessandra De Luca, 56, a client and a friend said, “He was really worried.”
Months on, Bernardinello has sadly passed from coronavirus at the age of 76.
May he rest in peace.
